Sheffield Tango Festival video taster | A view of the dance floor from the balcony

Taster video: Sheffield Tango Festival is perhaps the friendliest festival on the planet

I’ve danced at the Sheffield Tango Festival four years in succession, and as with the Feast there comes a point when I feel I’ve said it all before.

However, I couldn’t let the occasion go entirely without mention, so I’ve put together one of my taster videos intended to give a sense of the event …

The festival itself takes place in a rather splendid school building, with an afterparty at a funky bar, hence the different locations. (There’s also a separate Nuevo room during the weekend, but I fear I’d be recruited into scientology or something if I ever ventured into that.)

Ann and her team put a lot of care and thought into making the event a super-friendly one. Beginners are encouraged to attend, and there are various approaches to ensuring people get the opportunity to dance with new partners. This includes cambio (change) tandas where people swap partners several times during each song, and are encouraged to dance with people they don’t know.

The festival attracts the broadest range of dancers of any event I’ve ever been to, from very new beginners to teachers, and you’ll see that reflected on the dance floor in the various clips.

One standout feature of the festival is that there’s always a live orchestra for one of the milongas. To me, nothing can beat the magic of dancing to live music, and all of the orchestras have been amazing!

Finally, there’s an optional afterparty on the Sunday evening, held at a nearby bar. Dinosaurs are not guaranteed …
